The history of the horse

No other creature on this Earth has been so closely associated with Man and his history than the horse. No other creature has been so revered and, at the same time, so maltreated...
Since ancient times, horses have carried people into war - they have been involved in the conquering of innumerable countries and even continents...
The two-part TV documentary on "The history of the horse" was produced in cooperation with NDR television and, in the two 45-minute episodes, provides deep insights into the development, breeding and training of horses ...

Part 1 – From the earliest horse to the mustang – follows the historical development of the horse at original locations and with historical depictions of the horse's progress from its fox-sized ancestor, "Eohippus", to the prey of stone-age hunters, from the chariot races of ancient times and invasions by armies of Arabian horsemen through to the knights in the Middle Ages, from the heyday of horse breeding in Andalusia to the conquering of the Wild West using semi-tamed mustangs.

Part 2 – From battleground steed to racehorse – considers the role of the horse in art, war and sports. The film pays visits to what used to be military academies in the Middle Ages and which have become renowned centres of dressage, such as Saumur in France or Lipica in Slovenia, illustrates how famous horse breeds, such as the Lipizzaner, came about and follows the development of horses in the circus – and in war. This expedition through the "History of the horse" is rounded off with a visit to Newmarket, the UK's most prestigious racehorse breeding centre.
The History of the Horse is also available as a DVD.
As bonus material, there are also five portraits of famous breeds, the film trailer and a photo gallery. All in all, the DVD offers more than 130 minutes of horse) viewing pleasure.
