A Cruise through a Technical Wonder of the World – 15 hours on the Panama Canal:
From the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in 15 hours: WDR worldwide cruises the Panama Canal. We follow the passage of the “Ashanty”, the catamaran of a german born circumnavigator, and we accompany a pilot on board of a container vessel – just two of about 13,000 ships that use this important waterway a year. On our way we witness the 5 billion Dollar enlargement of this technical wonder of the world. In 2014, just in time for its 100th birthday, the canal will be doubled in size and depth, by dredging and with tons of dynamite. Main water reservoirs of the canal system are the gigantic Gatun Lake and the Rio Chagres, home to the Embera Indians who feed from fish and forest fruits.
