Just over 15 years more than 4,000 elephants and their leaders, the mahouts, worked in the forestry Thailand. But since the government has stopped the clear-cutting of forests, they are unemployed. Many mahouts, such as the 36-year old Vicha Vilaithonqcam and his elephant Dern Pen, moved to the big cities like Bangkok, where they hire themselves out since then as a tourist attraction, sell bananas as elephant food for 50 cents per bag, or offer a ride on the elephants. Vicha and his colleague Mon however, have other plans.
